First quarter
Key drive: The Bears’ lone scoring drive was unspectacular, but they chewed up a lot of the clock – 6:37, to be exact – in taking 11 plays to move 34 yards for Robbie Gould’s 37-yard field goal.
Key play: On the Lions’ first possession, Bears linebacker Lance Briggs stormed in on a blitz to sack Jon Kitna for a 13-yard loss on third-and-10. The play knocked the Lions back to their 10-yard line and gave the Bears terrific field position.
Key stat: The Bears had six first downs to the Lions’ zero.
Second quarter
Key drive: Orton went into quick-strike mode near the end of the first half, marching the Bears 80 yards in four plays for a 17-0 lead. Of several impressive throws, the best was a perfect 34-yard strike to Rashied Davis down the right sideline.
Key play: The Lions had a small measure of momentum, including their first two first downs of the game, when Bears defensive end Alex Brown snuffed the progress by forcing Kitna to fumble. The Bears recovered at the Detroit 24.
Key stat: Orton, sizzling, went into halftime with 217 passing yards, two touchdowns and a 145.2 passer rating.
Third quarter
Key drive: The Bears put away the game on the first series of the second half, with Orton leading a 71-yard touchdown drive for a 24-0 lead. He had completions of 24 and 30 yards.
Key play: Charles Tillman silenced big-talking Lions wide receiver Roy Williams – at least for the time being – by snaring a pass that went off Williams’ hands and returning it 26 yards for a 31-0 lead.
Key stat: The Bears’ passing game made up for an ordinary day by rookie running back Matt Forte, who had 15 carries for 36 yards through three quarters (and for the game).
Fourth quarter
Key drive: There wasn’t much to see in this quarter. The Lions drove 50 yards to the Bears’ 30 at one point, but Briggs and Mike Brown teamed up to stop wide receiver Mike Furrey a yard short on fourth-and-3.
Key play: Robbie Gould continued his fine start to the season with a 45-yard field goal for the game’s final points. Gould is 9-of-10 on field goals, with the lone miss coming from 49 yards.
Key stat: Former Northern Illinois standout Garrett Wolfe, getting mop-up duty at running back, carried seven times for 11 yards as the Bears ran out the clock.
