TSN: Lions' secondary improved

The Detroit Lions were pretty average in their offseason moves, according to the Sporting News. TSN football writer Dennis Dillon graded teams on their activity since the Super Bowl, and he said Detroit improved its defensive backfield, but didn't really do anything to address their woeful, yet integral, pass rush.

Believe it or not, the Lions' grade was actually second in the NFC North to the Minnesota Vikings's A. Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers – who, in case you hadn't heard, lost Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre, and the Chicago Bears – who continue to suffer from the delusion that they can continue to survive off Lions QB castoffs like Dave Krieg and Erik Kramer – earned D grades.

Sporting News, June 8: Detriot Lions. Detroit replenished its secondary with the acquisitions of cornerbacks Leigh Bodden and Brian Kelly and free safety Dwight Smith -- all of whom are expected to start. But the Lions still lack a dominant pass rusher.

Which is why TSN ranks the Lions' dead last, in terms of pass rush, of the NFC's 16 teams.

Sporting News, June 8: 16. Lions. Dewayne White is Detroit's only consistent pass-rush threat. On the other side, the team will rotate veteran Jared DeVries and second-year player Ikaika Alama-Francis, who remains too raw to be consistent.

How Georgia Tech's football team is developing (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson's says his team is "a work in progress." He has reason, as it is a team under a first-year coach learning a new offense and defense. But it's also a team that's 4-1 and has won its last two games by a combined score of 65-7. Here's a look at how Tech's position groups are doing.

Clemson, Georgia Tech to start at noon (Spartanburg Herald-Journal) Clemsons Oct. 18 home football game against Georgia Tech will kick off at noon and be televised by either ESPN or ESPN2.

Kick off college football season with full TV schedule (Access Atlanta) Hudson Grille kicks off college football season with an evening full of televised game action. Jacksonville State plays Georgia Tech, Charleston Southern plays Miami, Vanderbilt takes on Miami (Ohio), North Carolina State tackles South Carolina, and Oregon State collides with Stanford. Games play on more than 100 high-definition TVs. Interactive games include beer pong and more. And DJs spin ...

Noon kickoff for Tech-Clemson Oct. 18 (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) Georgia Tech's Oct. 18 game at Clemson will be a noon kickoff on ESPN or ESPN2, the ACC announced.

Georgia Tech earns 27-0 shutout of Duke (The Charlotte Observer) Jaybo Shaw kept it simple in his first start for Georgia Tech: Pass to Demaryius Thomas and hand it off to Jonathan Dwyer. Shaw had 230 yards passing on nine completions, all to Thomas, Dwyer ran for a career-best 159 yards and Georgia Tech shut out Duke 27-0 on Saturday. Shaw had a 2-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter and completed an 88-yard touchdown pass to Thomas ...

ON THIS DATE (Richmond Times-Dispatch) 1916 -- Georgia Tech beats Cumberland 222-0 in the most lopsided college football game in history. 1984 -- Walter Payton breaks Jim Brown's career rushing mark of 12,312 yards and Brown's career mark of 58 100-yard rushing games in a 20-7 victory over New Orleans. Payton breaks the record on Chicago's second play from scrimmage in the second half.

Thrashers still adjusting to new coach's system (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) New Georgia Tech football coach Paul Johnson had more than 40 practices to install his offense before turning it loose in a regular-season game.

Shaw and Thomas show off great partnership for Tech (AccessNorthGA) ATLANTA –- Georgia Tech’s offense started out sluggish in Saturday’s 27-0 win against Duke at Bobby Dodd Stadium. But the Yellow Jacket defense continued to dominate the opposition until Jaybo Shaw and Demaryius Thomas finally got Tech on the right track.

Ex-Navy QB likes Georgia Tech's chances (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) Former Navy quarterback Craig Candeto, who played for Johnson, has watched most of Georgia Tech's games, and he saw Duke play Navy. Candeto says Duke will benefit from having played Navy, which runs the same offense as Georgia Tech, but discounts the advantage.

Shaw awarded ACC Rookie of the Week honors (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) Freshman Jaybo Shaw is the ACC Rookie of the Week after leading Georgia Tech to a 27-0 win over Duke Saturday.
