Key play: Calvin Johnson touchdown
Here's a suggestion for the Lions: Keep it simple and let your big players make big plays.
That's just what they did in the fourth quarter Sunday, and it was nearly enough to sway momentum and trigger a comeback.
The Lions were trailing 16-3 but put together a nice drive, moving to the Giants' 35.
Then on first-and-10 they let Calvin Johnson, their rookie with the enormous physique and bigger talent, do his thing:
• Jon Kitna brought the Lions to the line without a huddle and took a quick shotgun snap.
• Calvin Johnson, lined up wide to the left, looped down the sideline, shrugging off a bump from Giants cornerback Kevin Dockery coming off the line.
• The Lions' five blockers held off the four-man Giants, giving Kitna time to loft a pass to the goal line. Calvin Johnson and Dockery were running step-for-step as New York safety Gibril Wilson closed in from the center of the field.
• Both the 6-foot-4, 239-pound Calvin Johnson and the 5-8, 188-pound Dockery were in position to make a play as they leapt for the ball. Guess who won possession?
• Touchdown. 16-10. Game on.
