| Johnson works out with first team, Stanton takes second team snaps.
ALLEN PARK -- Roy Williams will not practice this week as the Lions conclude their offseason workout program, choosing instead to rest a balky left hamstring for the fall.
Williams originally suffered the injury during the Lions' mandatory mini-camp three weeks ago. He caused a stir last week when he arrived late for an Organized Team Activity workout due to travel problems, which prompted Lions coach Rod Marinelli to lecture the media on the meaning of voluntary.
All OTA practices are voluntary, but heavily attended.
"It's coming around," Williams said of his injury Monday. "(It's a) slight pull, just something you got to deal with. I'll be ready for training camp, be ready for the season, be ready to win ball games."
Williams said he took part in a closed workout last Thursday to test the injury and "had a real good day." He could still feel a twinge, though, so he decided to sit out Friday's session and the remaining practices this week.
On Monday, Williams stretched with teammates in his No. 11 jersey and team-issue black shorts, but wore a Lions cap instead of his helmet throughout the hour-and-a-half workout. He did not participate in individual drills, but did run six routes during one helmet-less, half-speed 11-on-11 segment of practice.
Along with Williams, Shaun McDonald and Devale Ellis sat out Monday's session with minor injuries, and Mike Furrey and Eddie Drummond were not at the workout at all, leaving the Lions to practice with six receivers.
Marinelli said Furrey and Drummond are not injured.
"We're a good group," Williams said of the Lions receivers. "We just got to get Calvin Johnson to where he needs to be. Once he gets there, it's over."
The Lions' No. 1 pick out of Georgia Tech, Calvin Johnson has been running first team since mini-camp because of Williams' injury. Williams said the two are perfect compliments for one another.
"This system is based on that," he said. "Nobody gave Mike Furrey the time of day last year but when you catch 103 balls Û me and him just fed off each other 1-2 and hopefully me and Calvin can do the same things. But he's going to have to beat out Mike Furrey for that position."
Williams paused for two seconds, then finished his remarks with a laugh, "Ha, ha."
Also Monday, rookie quarterback Drew Stanton took all of the second-team reps in place of Dan Orlovsky.
Marinelli said Orlovsky is healthy, he just wanted to give Stanton work.
"We got to make sure they're all ready to go," he said.
Stanton, the Lions' second-round pick out of Farmington Hills Harrison and Michigan State, had been relegated to third-team duties most of the spring, rarely seeing live action.
"It's been a long progression, definitely, but like I said I'm starting to see the benefits of doing it the right way and it's starting to get converted to muscle memory and that allows you to play the game and not think as much," Stanton said.
"It's starting to kind of make sense. It's not just chicken scratch or foreign language to me now."
