Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb never has played a down in the NFL, and until a week from today, never will have been part of an NFL draft before.
Yet he gets it. He gets all of the numbers and projections, the ups, the downs of waiting to hear your name.
"Just because somebody is getting drafted behind somebody else — for instance, if you go in the seventh round, that doesn't mean you're any less talented than somebody who goes in the second ...," Kolb said. "It's definitely a marathon and not a sprint."
The marathon officially begins next weekend when 255 players will be selected in this year's talent grab.
And in a year when the only real consensus around the league is this isn't a good year to try to find a consensus on the top prospects, one name still comes up at the top of the board — Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson.
Yet given that in this year's unpredictable landscape, there is a scenario where he might not even be among the first three players selected. Yes, welcome to the 2007 draft.
The Rocky Mountain News dived in anyway. To find the top 100 players in this draft, regardless of position or team needs, scouts and personnel executives around the league as well as the players were interviewed during the past six months.
The digital video rolled and in the end, Calvin Johnson certainly was at No. 1. The question is if the Oakland Raiders will agree on draft day with the No. 1 pick.
"I'd love to be No. 1," Calvin Johnson said. "Definitely."
