| Lions Could Draft Calvin Johnson Just to Trade Him
In the FanHouse mock draft, the Detroit Lions used the second overall pick to select wide receiver Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech. Although he would be the Lions' fourth Top 10 receiver picked in the last five years, it makes sense: Just about everyone agrees that Calvin Johnson is the best prospect in the draft this year.
But Pro Football Talk floated an interesting idea: The Lions could draft Calvin Johnson, then get on the phone with all the other teams and offer him in a trade. Presumably, several other teams would love to have Calvin Johnson, and once the Lions establish that they own his rights, they might be able to get a fortune in players and draft picks. And, of course, if they don't find a trading partner, having a great receiver like Calvin Johnson on your team isn't a bad Plan B.
It's similar to what the San Diego Chargers did when they drafted Eli Manning first overall, only to trade him to the Giants an hour later. That worked out great for the Chargers, but it only worked out great for them because they were smart about what they did with the picks they got from the Giants. What are the odds on Matt Millen being smart with the picks he'd get if he trades Calvin Johnson?
